Saturday, September 19

Haven't posted anything for a bit because I haven't spent anything for a bit! It's so great being able to make it so long without needing to hit the grocery store. Used to be I was in the store every couple of days, but since getting heavy into coupons and stockpiling, I can stretch my time between trips and still have good food to serve the family!

Did go to a Schnucks store yesterday. Spent way more than I usually do on one shopping trip. That's what happens when I don't go alone!

It's been a good week.

Thursday, I had my plan of attack ready for Shop & Save. I was able to get what was on my list without changing it up because of them being out of something. I didn't have anyone with me adding extra items to the cart, and I made it to the checkout with a cart full of groceries and paid $5.60. The cashier turned to the next cashier over and told her that I did even better than she does. That second cashier came over to me when I was bagging and told me I was going to have to share my secrets. I told her that it was simply matching coupons I had with sale prices.

1 Kashi Honey Sunshine cereal $3.88, used FREE coupon
4 boxes of Cheez-Its on sale for 1.28
6 packages of Keebler Fudge Shoppe on sale 1.28, used four $1 off 1 coupons and two 55c off 1
12 boxes of Rice Krispie Treats on sale 1.28, used 6 $2 off 2 coupons
1 Sprite 12 pack, 3.68 used $2 off Sprite when you buy Cheez Its

2 packages of hamburger buns, $1 each, used $2 off bread when you buy Rice Krispie Treats

1 twin pack French loaves, $2.27, used $2 off bread when you buy Rice Krispie Treats
2 packages of bagels, $2 each, used two $2 off bread when you buy Rice Krispie Treats
1 Gallon of milk, $2.85, used $2 off milk when you buy Keebler cookies
Used the $4 catalina I earned last week as well as the usual $10 off $50.

Total spent $5.60, total saved $115.31 (95%). This receipt can also be sent off for one of the Kellogg's Fuel for School rebates for $10 back when you purchase 10 select items. Making this trip a money maker of $4.40!

Thursday Sales

Okay, I will admit it, I have somewhat of an addiction to finding good deals on groceries. I went to 2 Shop & Save stores yesterday to take advantage of the $10 off $50 promotion they run. Total spent at both was $25.63. Total saved at both was $124.55, so 83% savings! I love it when I can match up coupons, sales and catalinas!

First Shop & Save purchase:
4 Chex Mix on sale for 1.66, used two 50c off two coupons from Sunday papers
10 Betty Crocker frostings for 1.47, using 50c off coupons on each of them
5 Alexia snacks on sale for 1.98, used 5 $1 off coupons
5 A-1 Steak Sauce on sale for 3.47, used 5 $2 off coupons
and 10.68 worth of beef, using 5 $2 off beef when you buy A-1
Also had a $5 off $50 coupon from the local Entertainment book to use.

Total spent $15.26, total saved $58.80 (80%) Received a $5 off your next purchase catalina from the frosting, Chex Mix purchase.

Second Shop & Save purchase:
2 Oreos on sale for 2.88, used a $2 off when you buy 2 coupon
2 Oscar Mayer bologna, on sale 1.97, using a $2 off when you buy 2
2 Oscar Mayer hot dogs, on sale 1.97, using a $2 off when you buy 2
5 A-1 Steak Sauce, 3.47, $2 off coupons for each
$10.38 worth of beef, using 5 $2 off beef coupons
4 Edys ice cream, on sale for 2.50, no coupons (gasp!)
Used the $5 catalina received at the first stop.

Total spent $10.37, total saved $65.75 (86%) Received a $4 off your next purchase catalina from the ice cream.

So, $25.63 spent for $150.18 worth of groceries! Also, I'm sending off the two receipts for rebates of $5 back when you buy $10.01 worth of condiments. So, if you want to think about it, I spent $25.63, but I have a $4 catalina to use next time and will get $10 back on rebates, which figures to $11.63 for $150.18 worth of groceries (92%!)!

When people see my coupon binder and comment about how they just can't see spending the time that it took to get it organized, I think about that 92% savings on my grocery bill! Granted, not all of my shopping trips are that great, which leads me to my last stop for the day yesterday, at Dierbergs.

Our family drinks way too much soda, especially my partner, who will only drink Mt. Dew and usually falls in love with one of the weird "limited time only" flavors! Well, knowing how much soda we can go through, I am always on the look-out for good sales on it. Because Labor Day is coming, everywhere is running specials on Coke and Pepsi products, buy 4 get 1 free and Dierbergs had the best price for the 4. So, I stopped in to get a cartful of twelve packs.

4 Chinet 36ct lunch plates, on sale 2.50, used two $2 off coupons and 2 buy 1 get 1 free coupons
4 Keebler snack cracker packs (the little sandwich crackers with cheese or peanut butter), on sale for 1.69, used two $1 off when you buy 2 coupons
5 various Coke products 11.88
5 Game Fuel blue Mt. Dew 11.88
3 Cherry Dr. Pepper, 3.50 each but buy 2 get 1 free and was able to use three $1 off coupons
3 lemons $1 each
2 limes 50c each
and a $10.49 protein shake mix (the 17 year old swears he needs it so he can build muscles)
Used two $2 off fresh fruit when you buy Keebler crackers coupons to cover the lemons and limes.

Total spent $44.09 for $88.72 worth of stuff. Total saved $44.63 (50%). That receipt is headed off for a $20 rebate when you buy $50 worth of groceries, so that will bring that trip to $88.72 worth of groceries (and plates) for $24.09, a 73% savings. Not as fabulous looking as the Shop & Save trips, but when I find a good deal on soda, I stock up to get us through until the next deal.

So far this month total spent is $95.47, total saved is $169.18.

September Already!

Well, here is another month beginning. I can't believe how fast this year has flown by us! I'm starting a personal challenge to track my spending for the month. I've found that I spend better when I'm holding myself accountable. So, this blog will track all spending for groceries and other necessities. I need to clear out some space in the freezers and the pantry, so I'm aiming to spend little on groceries and use up more of what I already have.

I'm spending for a family of 6 plus three fur-babies. That includes two teenagers (read: bottomless pits), a very picky four year old, an 8 month old, myself and my partner, two dogs and a cat. I try to cook dinner most nights, but there are just sometimes when I declare it a "leftover bonanza" and everyone picks for themselves of whatever is available. Sometimes I also take dinner to the in-laws or make dinner over there. And, of course, there are those times when we eat out or bring home take-0ut. For nutrition purposes, I try to limit the amount of eating out. The 4 year old has food allergies which also makes food a challenge, especially if that food isn't prepared by me.

I headed out to the store yesterday to get buns for the brats we were having for dinner, milk, eggs and a few produce items. I spent a total of $25.75 for buns, salad mixes, tomatoes, cucumber, sprouts, croutons, ginger root, radishes, milk and eggs. I have one uncashed rebate check for $10, waiting for more to come in because I hate to go to the bank just to deposit one check.

My goal for the month of September is to spend less than $500 total. I will deduct from the $500 anything I spend and add to it any rebates received.
